Sourav Ganguly has been appointed Delhi Capitals head coach for IPL 2027, giving the franchise an experienced cricket leader ahead of the new season.
The former India captain returns to a new leadership role with the franchise after previously serving in several positions within the Capitals setup.
Delhi Capitals officially announced Ganguly’s appointment on October 6, 2026, making him the team’s new head coach after Hemang Badani’s two-year stint in the role.
The appointment gives Delhi Capitals an experienced cricket leader as the franchise begins preparations for the 2027 IPL season and the upcoming auction.
Sourav Ganguly Returns to Delhi Capitals
Ganguly is not a new face at Delhi Capitals.
His association with the franchise began in 2019, when he joined as an Advisor. He later held important leadership responsibilities within the Capitals ecosystem, including Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s teams.
His latest appointment therefore represents a return to the franchise in another major role.
This time, however, Ganguly will be directly responsible for the team’s coaching and cricketing preparations as head coach.
Hemang Badani’s Stint Comes to an End
Ganguly’s appointment means Hemang Badani is no longer Delhi Capitals’ head coach.
Badani had held the position for the previous two IPL seasons. Delhi now begins a new coaching chapter with Ganguly taking charge ahead of IPL 2027.
The change comes as Delhi Capitals look to improve their results and build a stronger team for the upcoming season.
What Did Sourav Ganguly Say?
After being appointed head coach, Ganguly expressed his excitement about taking on the role.
He highlighted his long relationship with Delhi Capitals and said he is looking forward to working with the squad and building a strong and fearless team.
That approach could become one of the major talking points around Delhi Capitals during their IPL 2027 preparation.
Why Ganguly Could Be Important for Delhi Capitals
Ganguly brings experience from several areas of cricket.
As a former India captain, he has experience leading players at the highest level. His previous involvement with Delhi Capitals also means he already understands the franchise’s structure and has worked with people across its cricketing setup.
His familiarity with the organisation could help him settle into the head coach position quickly.

Ganguly’s biggest strength is his leadership background.

That experience could be valuable in a T20 environment where decisions often have to be made quickly.
2. Familiarity With Delhi Capitals
Unlike a coach arriving at a completely new franchise, Ganguly already knows the Capitals setup.
He has worked with the organisation since 2019 and has held multiple roles across the franchise.ll
That familiarity could make the transition smoother.
3. Building a Stronger Team for IPL 2027
One of Ganguly’s first major challenges will be helping Delhi Capitals prepare for the new season.

Ganguly’s Biggest Challenge
The biggest question is simple:
Can Sourav Ganguly help Delhi Capitals challenge seriously for the IPL 2027 title?
His appointment alone will not guarantee success.
The team will still need the right players, a balanced squad, good injury management and strong performances during the season.
Ganguly’s role will be to bring his leadership experience into the coaching environment and help the team make better cricketing decisions.
Delhi Capitals’ IPL 2027 Preparation Begins
With the head coach now confirmed, Delhi Capitals can move forward with their preparations for IPL 2027.
The upcoming auction will be particularly important because the franchise will have to decide which areas of the squad need strengthening.
Ganguly’s experience could have an influence on those decisions, although the final squad will depend on the franchise’s overall strategy.
Final Thoughts
Sourav Ganguly’s appointment as Delhi Capitals head coach is one of the biggest IPL 2027 developments so far.
